In 2011, a profound chapter of my life began. Fresh out of the military, I found myself navigating a new path as a private military contractor, tasked with protecting ships from Somali pirates. What started as a job quickly turned into a journey of self-discovery, igniting an enduring love for ships, travel, and the remarkable continent of Africa.
My first encounter with Africa changed me in ways I never anticipated. Immersing myself in the vibrant cultures and forging connections with the local people offered me a new lens through which to see the world. It shifted my understanding of life, of humanity, and even of my own purpose.
In 2012, I settled in Djibouti, a small country bordering Somalia, to manage operations along the Red Sea. It was there that I truly fell in love with Africa. From day one, I was captivated by the warmth of its people, their resilience, and the way they radiated positivity despite enduring immense hardships. Yet, the stark reality of suffering was undeniable. I witnessed children walking barefoot through the streets, hungry and pleading for help. Their pain weighed on me, but it also awakened something profound: the realization that I could make a difference, however small. Helping those communities gave my life a sense of purpose I had never felt before.
The three years I spent living and working in Africa were transformative. From Djibouti to the Seychelles, the Maldives, and Kenya, and even as far as Zanzibar, Tanzania, and Ethiopia—where I experienced the serendipity of falling in love—each destination etched itself into my soul. The beauty of these landscapes, the richness of their cultures, and the spirit of their people left me with an indelible yearning to return, to share these experiences, and to give back.
